Sometimes, when I’m uncertain about what to pray or how to pray what’s on my heart, I just pray scripture. Usually I find that the act of repeating scripture back to God unfurls my tightly knotted heart and moves me into my own prayers. Psalm 130 is probably one of the first Psalms I read. I was introduced to it by singing the hymn “Out of the Depths” by Sovereign Grace Music. I love how it moves from seeking God to a proclamation of faith. And I can think of no better meditation of faith than verses 5 and 6:
5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
